Discussion Spotlight: A Low Magic World PDF  | Print |  E-mail

Welcome to the first (of hopefully many) spotlight discussions. Here, I discuss some recent points on a certain subject in the hopes of spurring some conversations and new ideas to sew.

If you're still interested read on.

The first point I'd like to talk about, is the fact that Khalidine is a low magic world. With this in mind, how should this effect the world we will all play in? What kind of impact would this have in a typical game of NWN2 Online?

Personally, I think that the PC is the exception. If every single player was a wizard or sorceror, it still wouldn't outnumber all the non-casters in the world. We plan on starting off in one large civilised city, and it's supposed to have an enormous population; PCs will only add up to a small fraction of the total number of people in it.

With that in mind, also think about who the PCs may end up interacting with primarily: Other PCs. If everyone who played was a caster, it will still seem like a high magic setting. This may not hurt the game setting, but it does force those in charge to take a different approach other than the one they had hoped for.

Many questions come to mind with this information. Would monsters be at a severe disadvantage with small magical numbers? How effective are all caster parties in a world that was developed by sword-play? The fighters may seem weak compared to a bunch of higher level casters, but they only have so many spells to cast a day, so how exactly are we to measure this?

theycallmetomu had suggested that we either hope that not everyone plays a caster, decide in advance who does and does not become a caster, or simply make it unattractive to choose being a caster. (http://www.khalidine.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,142/topic,276.0)

theycallmetomu also suggested making magic items unattractive to merchants who PCs normally sell 'loot' to. (http://www.khalidine.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,142/topic,258.15)

Laban suggests that restricting classes wouldn't get positive results from players. (http://www.khalidine.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,142/topic,567.0)

liquidacid suggested that we simply make spells that are exceptionally powerful difficult to get, requiring much toil and work. (http://www.khalidine.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,142/topic,567.0)

What are your thoughts on this subject? How do you encourage a low-magic world that still allows everyone to have fun? What kinds of changes should be expected?
