Many people say that Neverwinter Nights won't last after a year, and some people say that it is one of the worst games ever made. So with negatives opinions floating around like that, what makes one want to stay? What is so compelling about it that would captivate people for hours, making even some people spend a year or more of their lives on player-world servers?
Personally, I stay because it is the most flexible game as far as DnD goes. You have access to a great deal of players for your game, you get all the tools that were used in the original game creation, and you don't even need to be a certified genius to build the most rudimentary modules. Since Dungeons and Dragons, as well as any other table-top game, is relatively unknown the majority population, Neverwinter Nights gives people who might otherwise pass up a role-playing game a chance to see what it's like. It's hard finding good people to play with, and Neverwinter gives us access to almost every player that has bought the game and clicked on the "multiplayer" button at the main menu. When I bought the game, it wasn't for the single-player module; it was for the toolset. The idea of making any kind of world I wanted within the limits of a rather large toolset was attractive. I didn't need any special knowledge or elite training in software to do this either: I just click "toolset". I create a new area; modify it to my hearts content; and either open up the game for my friends or keep working on it to create my own masterpiece. Who of those who play games hasn't wanted or even thought about making their own game? Expertise helps, but with Neverwinter, it isn't necessary. Though I will admit that those without more experience will be at a disadvantage to keeping an audience, what I do know is that practice makes perfect. Even the most inept user can become a master with time and a decent FAQ to get them started. Everyday, I hear about others who use their expertise to create wizards and tools for lesser skilled users, and that just enforces why I love Neverwinter Nights. When did you start playing? Why are you still playing? Do you have any stories or anecdotes to share? Why do you love Neverwinter Nights? (18) Discuss |
