Discussion Spotlight: Forums and In-Game Content PDF  | Print |  E-mail

I've seen that many NWN1 communities tend to hold a lot of in-character discussion and activity in the world forums, as well as those forums being used to provide in-game information.   As we work toward our open beta, it's time to update our forums to be geared toward gameplay rather than development.    I've historically been opposed to using forums for in-character/in-game content, but the suggestion has been made by more than one person that we begin doing so.

My reasons for opposing are simple: in-character discussion should be occurring in-game; and if people can't meet up in-game, they can use PMs to coordinate.  I've always felt that to do otherwise was a form of metagaming - and often exposed other players to things that they would not reasonably be involved in, if it were strictly in-character interaction.

For in-game world news and info, hints to upcoming activities, etc it's been my preference to publish them to the main web site itself, in the form of news-like current event articles; or lore articles.   It seems to me that this is easier for the player than having to search through forum posts, determining what replies are relevant, what is "fan faction", etc.

However, there's no arguing with the fact that players do seem drawn to the forum-based structure.  I'd like to hear your thoughts on the subject either in the context of your experiences playing on NWN1 and NWN2 PWs; or simply in terms of what you'd like to see in an active PW.    As with all of these discussion spotlights, there's no one right or wrong answer, so don't hesitate to speak up.
